The Clever Double-Meaning

It’s easy to identify these clues because they are usually very short.
More than any other type of riddle, double-meaning clues are pure word play, which will have you reaching for the thesaurus.

Unlike anagram clues and composed clues, the double-meaning clue is quite rare. You might only find one or two per puzzle. You might not find any.

One Word, Two Meanings

Remember how I said that every cryptic crossword clue has the definition ("front door") and riddle ("side door")? That true except in two cases, and one of those exceptions is the double-meaning clue. These clues have two definitions side-by-side.

For example, the clue might be:

The answer means both “grow” and “just fine”.
Can you figure out what it is?

It feels pretty swell when, after staring at a clue for a while, you suddenly have a brainwave and both meanings snap into place!
